A post-mortem examination on a female torso, feared to be that of a missing former EastEnders actress, has proved "inconclusive", police said.
The body was found in Regent's Canal in Hackney, east London, on Tuesday and is feared to be that of Gemma McCluskie, 29.
An examination was held at Poplar Mortuary earlier but police said further investigations were needed.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody.
Police said an incident room had been opened in Barking, and further forensic tests were needed before formal identification could take place. This could take some days.
Ms McCluskie, who starred as Kerry Skinner in 2001, disappeared from Bethnal Green, east London, last week.
Family and friends have been carrying out searches across east London and handing out missing person posters.
